Your turn at wheel of life

Road to Recovery, a program in which volunteers drive patients to treatment centers and home again, is looking for volunteers. Drivers donate their time and the use of their vehicles to ensure patients have a means to get to their life-saving treatment.

Over 74,000 residents in Pennsylvania will learn that they have cancer this year, and for many of them the biggest obstacle they face is getting to treatment, the American Cancer Society says.

For information, contact Dan Catena, American Cancer Society Western Pennsylvania Region, at 412-919-1100, ext. 1110, or dan.catena@cancer.org.

Hungry summer

North Hills Community Outreach is requesting donations of rice mixes, canned fruit, crackers, macaroni and cheese and soup for its food pantries in Hampton and Bellevue. The pantries serve 350 families every month.

Pantry coordinator Brandi Rukovena said, "Summer is typically a slow time of the year for food donations. ... But the need is constant."

Make donations 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at 1975 Ferguson Road, Hampton. For information, to arrange an alternate drop-off time or conduct a food drive, contact Ms. Rukovena at 412-487-6316, option 1.

A swing and a smile

Passavant Memorial Homes Foundation said it raised $55,000 during its 18th golf outing Aug. 9 at Olde Stonewall Golf Club, Ellwood City.

Proceeds this year will support the mission of Accessible Dental Services to provide high-quality, compassionate and affordable dental care to people with mental and physical disabilities. All of the proceeds go to the service capital fund to assist in maintaining the mobile dental unit during its first year of operation.
