A Butler County woman was killed Saturday night in a car crash that was described by state police as alcohol-related.

Joann Marie Carpenter, 35, of Butler, was killed when she was ejected from a vehicle driven by Charles W. Shreffler, 40, of Sligo.

State police at Clarion said Ms. Carpenter was not wearing a seat belt.

Police said Mr. Shreffler was eastbound on Route 368 in Perry, Armstrong County, when his vehicle went off the road and struck a utility pole. It rolled several times, ejecting Ms. Carpenter, whose body was 75 feet from where the car came to a stop. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police reported the crash involved drunken driving but did not indicate whether Mr. Shreffler had been charged. Police said he suffered major injuries and was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian.

The accident happened at 5:07 p.m. Saturday.
