Fall Run Road work considered

A very large amount of fill may be available if Shaler Township commissioners go through with plans to reopen Fall Run Road. The road was closed a year and a half ago when it was deemed unsafe.
The 22-foot two-lane road proposed by township engineer Kevin Creagh would cut through the hillside to a depth of almost 20 feet in places. To illustrate how much fill this would create, he said the job would take thousands of Shaler public works trucks to haul away excavated material. "Just to move the earth is a three- to four-month project," he said at the commissioners' regular meeting tonight.
The project is pending township approval and not up for public bid as yet. Part of the job could be paid with money received through the Allegheny County gambling grant, the rest would be paid from township coffers. "Are you sure you want to do it?" he asked the commissioners.
While that vote may wait another month as preliminary work progresses, the Shaler commissioners unanimously passed an ordinance designed to protect workers affected by the merger of the Hampton and Shaler water authorities. Some jobs may be eliminated as the workforce of the two townships is realigned, according to David Shutter, president of township commissioners, but now the pensions of non-union workers hired as far back as 2005 will be vested, allowing them to collect their pensions.
