A Clarion County man was charged with homicide on Monday in the death of his 79-year-old father.

State police in Clarion said Cloyd Alvin Shimmons, of Sligo, died July 17 at UPMC Presbyterian, where he was admitted two days earlier after he was assaulted by his son.

The Allegheny County medical examiner's office said Mr. Shimmons died of blunt force trauma to the head due to an assault.

James Michael Shimmons, 54, also of Sligo, was denied bail at Clarion County Prison on charges of homicide, aggravated assault, terroristic threats, simple assault and harassment. A preliminary hearing is scheduled next Tuesday.
