A Beaver County man accused of shooting an 8-year-old child dressed as a skunk because he mistook her for an animal was held for trial today after he waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

Thomas Grant, 24, of Rochester, will head to trial on charges of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and simple assault.

On Oct. 20, New Sewickley police went to 376 Brewer Road shortly after 8 p.m. on Saturday for a report that a girl dressed as a skunk had been shot. Medics flew her to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, where she initially listed in critical condition, New Sewickley police Chief Ronald Leindecker said.

Chief Leindecker said officers interviewed several witnesses before charging Mr. Grant.

Mr. Grant remains out of jail after posting $10,000 bail.
