A house fire on Shenango Road in Big Beaver killed one person and sent another to the hospital this morning, the borough's volunteer assistant fire chief said.

Assistant Chief Adam Crepp said the Big Beaver Volunteer Fire Company got a report of a house fire on the 1100 block of Shenango Road just before 2 a.m.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire in the front of a house at 1137 Shenango and were able to contain it within minutes, he said.

Two interior teams went into the house, the first finding one person dead inside, Chief Crepp said. He did not know that person's identity.

Emergency medical personnel took one other person to a hospital, he said.

Beaver County Coroner Teri Tatalovich-Rossi said it would be several days before the victim's identity was confirmed because the body was "burnt beyond recognition."

She said authorities were assuming the victim was female based on information about who was in the house.

Pennsylvania State Police in Beaver said the barracks there does not have a fire marshal so the investigation is being handled out of the Butler County barracks.

A fire marshal there could not be immediately reached this morning.
