While some may not have liked Woodland Hills High School's decision to send nearly 100 students home from school for failing to tuck their shirts into waistbands on Thursday, the school got its message across -- only 11 students broke the code yesterday and four went home for the violation.

Principal Dan Stephens said the four students who were sent home yesterday refused to comply with the code and were picked up by their parents. Seven other students who did not fix their clothing were placed in the in-school suspension room.

"I knew on Day 2 there would be kids doing it just to go home, so the ones that wouldn't comply were placed in internal suspension and had the option to call their parents and go home," he said.

Jim Kelly of Swissvale, the parent of two Woodland Hills High School students, said he felt the school was right in strictly enforcing the rule.

"If you comply with the rules, you don't have a problem. Do what you're told and it won't be an issue; it's that simple," he said.

But Bill Jordan of Swissvale said his son was sent home from the school for wearing a hooded sweatshirt before he had a chance to put it in his locker.

"There are rules and regulations, I understand that, but give these kids a break," he said. "To me it's a little out of hand."

Mr. Jordan also complained that he was not notified that his son was being sent home. Mr. Stephens said that all parents were notified.

The principal said administrators were heavily enforcing the waistband rule on Thursday and students received warnings for other infractions. He also said the dress code enforcement has sparked discussion of students wearing uniforms next school year.
