Wilkinsburg company agrees to settle charges it shipped pressurized gas by FedEx

A Wilkinsburg-based company has agreed to pay the federal government $288,000 to settle criminal charges that it caused hazardous materials to be shipped by air.
Field Environmental Instruments Inc., which rents equipment to other companies, was accused in a November indictment of sending pressurized gas via FedEx. Pressurized gas is considered a hazardous material, according to the indictment, and can't be transported by plane.
A memorandum filed by the company's attorneys late Monday said that negotiations with federal prosecutors led to the agreement to pay an amount based on the settlements of similar cases nationwide. The $288,000 would settle all criminal and civil liabilities, according to the memo.
A hearing at which Field Environmental Instruments is expected to plead guilty and be sentenced is scheduled for Friday before U.S. District Judge Mark R. Hornak.
