Driver's license centers closed for holiday
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will close all driver license and photo centers Oct. 6 through Oct. 8 in observance of Columbus Day.
Customers may still obtain driver and vehicle products and services online through PennDOT's Driver and Vehicle Services website, www.dmv.state.pa.us.
Driver and vehicle online services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and include driver's license and photo ID renewals; vehicle registration renewals; driver-history services; changes of address; driver license and vehicle registration restoration There are no additional fees for using online services.
High school bands to perform
Bands from 16 high schools will perform in the Tournament of Bands competition at 4 p.m. Saturday at the stadium at Baldwin High School, 4653 Clairton Blvd., Whitehall.
Participating bands are Carrick; Karns City; Yough; Connellsville; Steel Valley; Ritchie County, Keyser and Parkersburg South, W.Va.; Somerset; Girard; McKeesport; East Allegheny; Upper St. Clair; Woodland Hills and Baldwin.
The Robert Morris University band also will perform.
Tickets will be available at the gate.
Memorial for fallen Marine set for Oct. 13
A memorial service will be held Oct. 13 for Marine Corps Lt. Col. Christopher K. Raible, an Irwin native killed in Afghanistan last month.
Lt. Col. Raible was a 1990 graduate of Norwin High School and a starting defensive back for the Norwin Knights football team. Norwin football players will wear the U.S. Marine Corps insignia on their helmets through the end of the season as a show of respect.
The memorial will be held at 1 p.m. in the Norwin High School auditorium, 251 McMahon Drive, North Huntingdon.
Academic policy for student athletes OK'd
Gateway school board unanimously approved a new academic policy Sept. 26 affecting any student participating in sports and extracurricular activities. The policy, which will go into effect next summer, requires students to maintain a 2.0 grade point average for the previous nine-week grading period.
A student's grade point average will be checked in January, June and August, with the January check qualifying students to participate in the spring semester and the June check qualifying them for fall. If necessary, students who fall short the requirements in June can attend summer school and have their GPA checked again in August for fall activities.
Students also must maintain a weekly GPA of 2.0 to remain eligible.
The board also heard from Monroeville resident Gary Grysiak, whose daughter is a senior this year. He told the board that the date scheduled for the district prom, May 3, is Good Friday for Orthodox Christians, and his daughter would not be permitted to attend her senior prom if the district did not change the date. The prom was rescheduled for May 10.
