A New Castle man was in critical condition Friday after police shot him following an exchange of gunfire in front of a house on Montgomery Avenue, state police said.
Police said Ivy Lanthier, 43, held a 23-year-old man at gunpoint in the house. When officers went to the address around 12:16 a.m., they surrounded the house and tried to negotiate with the man to surrender.
Police said Mr. Lanthier came out and fired at least three rounds. New Castle Mayor Anthony G. Mastrangelo said the man had a pistol and shotgun and fired the former at an officer.
Four officers returned fire, the mayor said. The suspect was hit and ultimately taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio.
Mr. Mastrangelo said the officers are on administrative leave while state police investigate.
