A Monroeville police officer was injured trying to detain a man after a suspected drug deal at the Monroeville Mall this afternoon.
The officer, whose name police have not released, was not seriously hurt and was evaluated at a hospital and released, Monroeville police Chief Steven R. Pascarella said.
The officer saw a drug deal between two people in the mall parking lot near the Burlington Coat Factory about 12:36 p.m., Chief Pascarella said. When the officer tried to detain the pair, a woman drove off in a white Pontiac Sunbird toward James Street, the chief said.
The male in the other vehicle, a tan Chevrolet Impala, was ordered to the ground, but jumped back into his vehicle when the woman left. He also started to drive off.
Chief Pascarella said the officer fired a Taser at the man and was trying to pull the man out of the car when he got knocked to the ground.
The man drove off toward Best Buy.
Two witnesses saw the man throw a large amount of heroin and a gun out of the window as he was driving away, the chief said.
Monroeville police and other local departments are investigating. They are looking for both vehicles.
