Monroeville declares disaster emergency

Monroeville officials issued a declaration of disaster emergency Monday morning to allow the municipality to hire contractors, authorize overtime or make purchases to ensure residents' safety during severe weather caused by Hurricane Sandy, municipal manager Jeffrey Silka said.
Public works director Mike Adams said crews have been clearing leaves from basins and pipes to prevent flooding in low-lying areas.
"There are areas that are susceptible to flooding," Mr. Silka said. "We're making those preparations now in anticipation of having to close certain areas."
Mr. Adams said he has road-closed signs and barricades with flashing lights ready in case roads flood. He said arTeas that could possibly flood include Abers Creek Road, Old William Penn Highway near the Penn Hills border, the intersection of routes 28 and 130, and sections of the Tri-Boro Expressway going toward Turtle Creek.
