A Wilmerding man was killed this morning in an accident at a manufacturing plant in the Hempfield Industrial Park.
Westmoreland County Coroner Kenneth A. Bacha said Richard John Licina, 60, was crushed between two steel coils at Plum Corp., 1534 Woodward Drive Extension.
Mr. Licina was found injured about 9:30 a.m. State police said Mr. Licina had been attempting to move a 10,000-pound steel coil using a 15-ton overheard crane.
As he began to lift it, another 5,000-pound coil became dislodged, slid off the stack and crushed him against another stack of coils. Mr. Bacha said no one witnessed the accident.
The coroner's office ruled that his death was an accident.
Mr. Licina was one of about 15 employees at the plant, where authorities said he had worked for about 30 years.
The company produces industrial and commercial metal roofing and siding products.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration also is investigating.
Alfieri Funeral Home of Wilmerding is handling funeral arrangements.
