An Indiana County husband and wife were charged with assaulting a Homer City police officer as he tried to investigate a suspected drunken driver Saturday night.

According to state police at the Indiana barracks, Mark Anthony Simms, 41, and Michelle Lynn Simms, 39, both of Homer City, were charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and resisting arrest after they interfered in a suspected drunken driving incident along Kassell Street in Center Township.

The police said Mr. and Mrs. Simms arrived at the scene of the traffic stop and "refused to comply with officers requests."

They said Mr. Simms was subdued with pepper mace and his wife "attempted to pull the arresting officer off of her husband."

No motive was given.
