An 18-year-old woman was sexually assaulted early Sunday morning at Carnegie Mellon University, according to campus police.

In a campus crime alert, campus police reported that they received a report at 2:15 a.m. that the woman, who is not a Carnegie Mellon student, was assaulted as she was walking across the Greek quad, a courtyard on Morewood Avenue bordered by fraternity houses.

She said a young man approached her and began talking to her and tried to kiss her. When she rebuffed him, he became aggressive and sexually assaulted her. She was treated at a hospital and released.

Campus police have turned over the investigation to the Pittsburgh police sex assault unit.

Spring Carnival, an event featuring rides and music that draws a large number of students and community members to the campus, ended Saturday night at 10 p.m. University spokeswoman Teresa Thomas said she did not believe the assault and the event were connected.
