A Joffre woman was killed Friday morning when a flatbed tow truck struck the sedan she was riding in on Route 51 near the West End Bridge.
The medical examiner's office identified the woman as 26-year-old Amanda Crook. Police said she was a passenger in a Cadillac Catera that was heading north on Route 51 toward the bridge about 11 a.m. The driver, a 21-year-old Clinton woman, made an improper left turn at the intersection just before the bridge and was struck by the southbound truck, Lieutenant Daniel Herrmann said.
The truck driver, a 39-year-old man who was traveling in the center lane, told police he couldn't stop to avoid the vehicle. He suffered minor injuries, as did the driver of the sedan.
Officers at the intersection blocked traffic, which was already heavy due to the noon Pitt football game against West Virginia University at Heinz Field, just across the bridge.
