The West End embarked on a six-month master plan process Wednesday with a wine-and-cheese reception at Artifacts, a home furnishings warehouse.

The stakeholder-directed process begins with a new branding effort to change the image of the West End, starting with a new name, the West End Village.

Dru Simeone, executive director of the West Pittsburgh Partnership, said the partnership has been working for years "to transition the West End from being the most disconnected, neglected part of the city and to blow wide open the doors for riverfront, housing and commercial development."

The master plan is getting $150,000 from state Sen. Wayne Fontana, D-Brookline.
