The Wabash Tunnel will remain open only to outbound traffic at least through the end of December, the Port Authority has announced.

A tractor-trailer struck traffic control boxes and gates at the South Side end of the tunnel on Oct. 22, damaging them. The equipment is used to reverse the direction in which traffic flows.

Because of the damage, the authority cannot switch from the outbound mode to the inbound configuration that typically is used during the morning rush.

The agency said requesting price quotes, ordering and shipping parts and installation was expected to take 10 to 12 weeks and cost about $60,000.
