Two teenage boys were arrested in Polish Hill Tuesday night after police said they spotted the pair in a stolen car and one punched a police dog.

A K-9 officer from the city's Zone 2 police station based in the Hill District spotted the car near the intersection of Bigelow Boulevard and Herron Avenue about 8:20 p.m. When he confirmed that the car had been reported stolen out of the city's Zone 5 station in Highland Park, he turned on his lights and sirens, Lt. Jason Lando said.

Both boys tried to run. The K-9 officer arrested one boy at the scene while his dog chased the other boy and caught him a short way away. The second boy punched the dog in the face and the animal bit him, Lt. Lando said.

The dog is doing well and the boy was taken to a hospital to be evaluated for bites to his arms, the lieutenant said.

Both boys will face charges of receiving stolen property and the boy accused of punching the dog will be charged with assaulting a police dog, the lieutenant said. The boys' names and ages were not released.
