The 16th Street Bridge in the Strip District re-opened late Friday night after being closed earlier in the evening because of an Equitable Gas Co. gas leak.

Crews responding to a call about an odor of gas in the area found a leak in a gas main on Smallman Street under the 16th Street Bridge, according to Equitable spokesman Scott Waitlevertch.

Police and firefighters closed the 16th Street Bridge at both ends, according to gas company and fire officials. Penn Avenue was also closed at 17th Street.

The repairs were made and the streets re-opened by midnight, said the gas company.
