Shadyside Presbyterian Church pastor Barnes named president of Princeton seminary

The Rev. M. Craig Barnes, pastor of Shadyside Presbyterian Church and professor of pastoral ministry and leadership at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, has been named president of Princeton Theological Seminary. He will start his new post Jan. 1.
Rev. Barnes, a nationally popular writer and speaker, came to Pittsburgh in 2002 from National Presbyterian Church in Washington D.C., where his congregation included powerful legislators from both sides of the aisle.
The following year he took on additional duties as pastor of Shadyside Presbyterian Church and rebuilt its membership to 1,100 after it internal turmoil wrought heavy losses in the late 1990s.
Both churches and seminaries belong to the Presbyterian Church (USA).
He received his master of divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1981 and holds a doctorate in church history from the University of Chicago. He is the author of eight books, and a columnist for the mainline Protestant magazine The Christian Century.
Rev. Barnes, who will continue to teach pastoral ministry while serving as president at Princeton, has served as a board member at the seminary.
