Motorists attempting to get into Downtown or to the North Shore for the afternoon Pirates game at PNC Park are struck in gridlock due to another weekend of roadwork.

Traffic inbound on the Parkway West was backed up to the Interstate 79 interchange. Meanwhile, westbound traffic on West Carson Street was not moving and was so clogged that cars could not get off the Fort Pitt Bridge ramp onto the roadway.

The severe backups were caused by the closure through 5 a.m. Monday of the northbound Portal Bridge in Point State Park that takes traffic from the Fort Pitt Bridge and the Parkway East to the Fort Duquesne Bridge. Workers are milling and patching the Portal Bridge.

The recommended detour is to use the West End Bypass and West End Bridge, or to exit at the Boulevard of the Allies and turn left at Stanwix Street and Fort Duquesne Boulevard to reach the Fort Duquesne Bridge.

Also closed for the same time period is the Fort Pitt Boulevard ramp to the Fort Duquesne Bridge; the ramp from Commonwealth Place to the Fort Duquesne Bridge; and the ramps from the Fort Pitt Bridge and Parkway East to Fort Duquesne Boulevard and the 10th Street Bypass.
