Road work beginning on Browns Hill Road area project

Construction is scheduled to begin today on the second phase of improvements to the corridor that links the Homestead Grays Bridge and Parkway East through Squirrel Hill and Greenfield.
The work zone for the $2.8 million project stretches about one mile along Browns Hill Road and Beechwood Boulevard, from Imogene Road to Forward Avenue.
In addition to road resurfacing, plans call for improvements to drainage, guide rail, sidewalks, curbs, lighting, signage, crosswalks and traffic signals.
New signals will be installed at the Browns Hill-Beechwood Boulevard-Hazelwood Avenue intersection and at Beechwood and Lilac Street. They will be able to automatically adjust their timing based on traffic volumes, said Patrick Hassett, Pittsburgh's assistant public works director for transportation and engineering.
The intersections also will get audible pedestrian crossing signals, he said.

The only traffic pattern change will be that traffic on Hazelwood will have about twice the time to turn right on a green signal onto Browns Hill toward the bridge.
The project also calls for modifications to the Beechwood Boulevard-Monitor Street intersection.
The early stages are not expected to disrupt traffic, as crews excavate away from the road for the new signals and work on sidewalks and pedestrian ramps.
When resurfacing begins next year, traffic restrictions will occur during nonpeak daytime hours. Some short-term closures and detours may be required for the Monitor Street work, Mr. Hassett said.
The project is scheduled for completion in October.
