Refrigerator donors collect cash

Richard Linnert shows off Pennsylvania's oldest refrigerator at his Baldwin Borough home. Mr. Linnert decided to recycle the appliance, which once belonged to his aunt, through Duquesne Light's Watt Choices program.

Baldwin Borough resident Richard Linnert, who said, "This is exciting. I never win anything," owned the refrigerator deemed to be the oldest in a contest Duquesne Light launched in the spring with JACO Environmental and Sears.
The campaign to reduce the drain on the electric grid resulted in the collection and recycling of 18,360 inefficient refrigerators and freezers statewide between April and August, 2,200 of them in Duquesne Light's service area. Participants received $35 for their sacrifice.
For giving up his 1937 model, Mr. Linnert also received a $1,000 Sears gift card for recycling the oldest refrigerator and another $250 Sears gift card.
"I was cleaning things out of the basement, and this was just a chance to get rid of it," he said. "I thought I would get the $35 and that would be it. I had no idea it would be the oldest in the state."
The contest and rebate period is over, but people can continue to donate their old refrigerators and freezers by calling 1-877-270-3521.
