Ravenstahl: 'Inappropriate' to comment on South Side shooting by off-duty Pittsburgh officers

Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl this morning called the South Side shooting of a driver and his mother by five off-duty police officers unfortunate but said it would be "inappropriate" for him to comment on the officers' actions.
Mr. Ravenstahl said the shooting, which began with a police chase in Homestead and ended on East Carson Street on the South Side as bars were emptying about 1:40 a.m. Sunday, still is under investigation. Five off-duty city police officers fired on the moving car on a crowded main street, wounding the 37-year-old driver and his mother as the car struck several vehicles parked along East Carson.
"I can imagine it was a horrific scene," the mayor said. "Our officers are trained to keep people safe and that's what they did here. Needless to say, it was a scary situation."
The mayor noted this incident began outside the city and ended up on the South Side, but city officials have been concerned about the late-night atmosphere in the popular bar and restaurant district.
Mr. Ravenstahl plans to hold a news conference Tuesday to discuss results of a study by the Responsible Hospitality Institute, which looked into ways to improve the relationship between the district and residents in the surrounding neighborhood.
