Rash of Shadyside burglaries brings warning from Pittsburgh police

Pittsburgh police today warned Shadyside residents to be mindful of who they let into apartment buildings after a rash of burglaries in recent weeks.
Detectives are investigating at least a dozen break-ins since May in which the doors to buildings show no signs of forcible entry yet the doors to the units themselves have been pried open with tools, Sgt. Kevin Gasiorowski of the Pittsburgh police burglary squad said.
The burglaries have occurred in a 10-block area that includes the 5700 block of Walnut Street, the 600 block of College Avenue, the 5500 block of Elmer Street, the 700 block of South Negley Avenue and the 600 block of Maryland Avenue.
Items taken included laptops, jewelry, cash, credit cards, GPS systems and iPads.
The burglaries have happened during the day. In at least one case, a resident told police he saw a man buzzing the doorbell before he fled. Responding officers found the back door to that building propped open.
"Know who you're letting in," Sgt. Gasiorowski said. "Make sure no one is sneaking in behind you."
