Public comments invited on Port Authority cuts, fare hikes

Port Authority is accepting public comments on its proposed service cuts and fare increases.
A form for making comments is available on the authority's website, www.portauthority.org , at the "Proposed Service Cuts" banner. Comments also can be mailed to Port Authority Fare & Service Proposals, Heinz 57 Center, 345 Sixth Ave., Floor 3, Pittsburgh 15222-2527.
The public comment period ends March 9 at 4 p.m. A public hearing is scheduled for Feb. 29 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Downtown.
The authority, facing a projected $64 million deficit for the 2012-13 fiscal year, has proposed cutting 35 percent of its existing service and eliminating 46 of 102 routes on Sept. 2. Fares would rise July 1 by 25 cents in Zone 1, to $2.50, and 50 cents in Zone 2, to $3.75.
