Plainclothes officers have arrested a man accused of shooting another man to death on his birthday outside a Hill District barber shop this summer.

Gregory Smith, 26, of the Hill District, is awaiting arraignment tonight on a charge of criminal homicide in connection with the July 6 shooting death of Jaquae Pascal outside the Team Mozzi barber shop near the corner of Kirkpatrick Street, where Mr. Smith lives, and Centre Avenue.

Major Crimes Lt. Daniel Herrmann said in a news release that officers Matthew McCarthy and John Henson with the city's Zone 2 station in the Hill District spotted Mr. Smith when they pulled over a jitney during a traffic stop about 5 p.m. They said Mr. Smith initially lied about his identity and that officers found a bag of marijuana when they searched him.

Homicide detectives obtained a warrant on Aug. 30 to arrest Mr. Smith in connection with Mr. Pascal's death. Investigators wrote in a criminal complaint that a witness told them Mr. Smith, who goes by the nickname "Pretty," shot Mr. Pascal in the back with a revolver and then ran away toward a townhouse on Kirkpatrick Street.

In addition to the homicide charge, Mr. Smith will also face charges of providing false identification to law enforcement and failure to appear, Lt. Herrmann said.
