Pittsburghers turn out for National Day of Service

Hundreds of volunteers turned out today in the Pittsburgh region for about 20 local events aimed at helping others during the annual Martin Luther King National Day of Service.
Nearly 50 people participated at the Homewood AME Zion Church preparing care packages for troops serving overseas. Both Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and mayoral candidate, city Councilman Bill Peduto, wrote letters that will be included in the care packages.
Among other service projects in the area, volunteers and the American Red Cross in Highland Park distributed leaflets about fire safety prevention, helpers at the Kingsley Center in Larimer worked on a project to end violence against women and volunteers in New Kensington helped build a house for a veteran with Habitat for Humanity.
More special events are scheduled Sunday and Monday as part of the National Day of Service campaign.
