Pittsburgh YWCA names 2012 recipients of Racial Justice Award

The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh has named the recipients of the 2012 Racial Justice Award, an annual tribute to community leaders who promote equality in society.
Tim Stevens, chairman and CEO of Black Political Empowerment Project, was honored in the community engagement category for his decades of work to promote equal rights and anti-violence.
Chauncey W. Smith, an employment and diversity consultant for companies including H.J. Heinz Co. and Pope & Associates, was recognized in the company and business division.
Epryl King, president of Raising Achievement in Monroeville and Pitcairn Inc., was recognized in education for her work to reduce achievement gaps and raise awareness of their effects.
The Rev. Moni McIntyre of the Church of the Holy Cross was honored in the faith category for being a pillar for social justice in the community.
University of Pittsburgh's Paula K. Davis, assistant vice chancellor for health services diversity, was honored in the health category for a program she implemented on sensitivity to cultural and racial differences in the medical school.
Another Pitt faculty member, David A. Harris, distinguished faculty scholar and professor of law, was selected in the legal category. Mr. Harris is a national expert on racial profiling.
Youth achievement awards were given to Alexis Werner of Shaler Area High School and Sewickley Academy graduate Michael Sutton, who now attends Duke University. Ms. Werner created a national nonprofit, Seeds of Hope, to help returning veterans and has facilitated a dozen conferences and workshops on issues, such as diversity, at her campus. Mr. Sutton founded Students Advocating for Equity at Sewickley, led the school's first Stand Against Racism and has been involved in a number of other causes through his school.
