Pittsburgh Councilman Bill Peduto on Monday will introduce legislation that would provide free on-street parking Nov. 24 in honor of "Small Business Saturday," a day when shoppers are urged to support independent and small retailers.

The city normally enforces meters from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Mr. Peduto's legislation would waive enforcement Nov. 24 at on-street spaces citywide.

"Our neighborhood retailers are a big part of what makes Pittsburgh a great city," Mr. Peduto said in a statement. Waiving meter enforcement during one of the busiest shopping days of the year, he said, is a way to say "thank you" to store owners and shoppers who contribute to the city's vibrancy.

The legislation does not affect parking garages or metered lots.
