The board of the Pittsburgh Public Schools moved a step closer to selling the former Pittsburgh Schenley High School by placing a motion to authorize the sale on the agenda for its Feb. 27 board meeting.

A resolution to sell the building to PMC/Schenley HSB Associates, L.P for $5.2 million has been prepared for the board's vote.

If the sale goes through, the district must pay off the approximately $3 million debt on the Schenley building, which will leave the district with about $2.2 million.

School directors Thomas Sumpter, Mark Brentley and Regina Holley said they will vote against the sale.

The developers, who are associated with PMC Property Group of Philadelphia, presented plans Monday for a $36.9 million project that would create an estimated 178 luxury one- and two-bedroom apartments with parking places inside and outside of the building.

The bid was the highest of the four received on the property and was recommended by a review panel put together by an outside firm hired by the board.
