Pittsburgh police asked residents Saturday night to help them find two young boys who asked an older woman for a ride and caused her to crash into a fire hydrant while stealing her purse.
Shortly before 5 p.m., an 84-year-old woman left a church on Landis Street in Sheraden when two boys, who she guessed were between 10 and 12 years old, asked her for a ride, officials said; the woman obliged.
She later told police that after they hopped in the car, the boys attempted to steal her purse, Commander Scott Schubert, of the city's Zone 6 station on the West End, wrote in an alert message sent to community members. The woman told police she tried to stop the boys from taking her purse and the scuffle caused her to crash into a fire hydrant near the corner of Ashlyn and Landis streets.
The boys ran away with the woman's purse, which police later found inside a vacant home. Her wallet was missing.
Police said both boys were about 4 feet tall. One wore a blue-and-white shirt, and another wore a red T-shirt.
Police are asking anyone with information to call Zone 6 detectives at 412-937-3051.
