Pittsburgh police commander with 2nd full-time job is subject of inquiry

Pittsburgh police Cmdr. Eric Holmes, who faced scrutiny for once holding a second full-time law enforcement job, is now the subject of an internal investigation, a city councilwoman said Tuesday.
Councilwoman Theresa Kail-Smith, the chairwoman of the public safety committee, said public safety director Mike Huss confirmed the investigation to her Monday.
She said the internal investigation will examine his second job as the campus public safety chief at Slippery Rock University, when he was employed full time as a Pittsburgh police sergeant at the same time. Questions have arisen as to whether it violated bureau policy. The investigation will also probe how he managed to earn around $27,000 in overtime pay from the Pittsburgh police bureau during roughly the same time period.
Cmdr. Holmes was one of four bureau employees who formed a side company, Diverse Public Safety Consultants LLC, with the former police chief, Nate Harper, sparking criticism and a policy review from Mayor Luke Ravenstahl. That company will be dissolved, according to an attorney for Cmdr. Holmes.
