The Pittsburgh police bomb squad has determined that the suspicious suitcase that led to the evacuation of Market Square this morning was not dangerous but was filled with clothes and other personal items.
Police bureau spokeswoman Diane Richard said a wire sticking out that caused alarm was part of a harmless electronic object.
After X-raying the red, wheeled suitcase sitting in the middle of the square towards its southern end, near the Primanti Brothers restaurant, the bomb squad destroyed it with a high-powered stream of water, Ms. Richard said.
The 911 call about the package came in at 8:41 a.m., an Allegheny County dispatch supervisor said. Police then evacuated the square and roped it off. The square reopened around 11 a.m.
It is not yet known who the suitcase belonged to, but it seems that someone simply left it there, Ms. Richard said.
