Pittsburgh police announce money missing from Municipal Courts Building

Over an 18 month period, $17,000 went missing from the Pittsburgh police Central Records Reporting Unit in the Municipal Courts Building, a city official said today.
City Controller Michael Lamb said another $60,000 worth of out-of-date checks were not deposited.
"We are working to see if that money is recoverable," he said.
The money -- which was reported missing Nov. 16 -- came from reports and documents purchased by the public, police spokeswoman Diane Richard said in a press release.
Ms. Richard offered no reason for announcing the money was missing 56 days after it was reported. She did not reply to a request for further comment.
Mr. Lamb was notified Nov. 19 and asked to conduct an audit, Ms. Richard said.
"We are also looking at cash management on the city level," Mr. Lamb said.
Now, police no longer will accept cash as payment for reports and documents, according to the release. Checks or money orders will be accepted, she said.
The supervisor who discovered the loss has asked to purchase a new cash register to track transactions, she said, and the record-keeping process has been revised.
"We believe the immediate steps taken will insure that this will not happen again," Ms. Richard said.
No charges have been filed, and "suspect name(s)" will not be released, she said.
