Pittsburgh opens cooling centers

Pittsburgh will keep four senior centers open until 7 p.m. today through Sunday to serve as cooling stations for older people.
The National Weather Service forecast calls for highs in the low 90s each day. Today's forecast high is 93, or three degrees short of the all-time record for the date.
The cooling centers will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and Friday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. They are the Greenfield Healthy Active Living Center, 745 Greenfield Ave.; Homewood Healthy Active Living Center, 7321 Frankstown Ave; Market House Healthy Active Living Center, 12th and Bingham streets; and Sheraden Healthy Active Living Center, 720 Sherwood Ave.
No heat warnings or other advisories had been posted for Pittsburgh as of this morning, but much of Ohio was under a red flag warning, which means that strong winds, low humidity and heat will create "explosive fire growth potential," according to the weather service.
