Citing a need for "one last round of outreach," Pittsburgh Controller Michael Lamb has scheduled a series of community meetings to make residents aware of help that's available for fighting new property assessments.

One of those meetings will be held at 7 p.m. today at Pittsburgh Weil PreK-5 in the Hill District.

The city is offering homeowners help with formulating assessment appeals and will even send someone to hearings to argue on homeowners' behalf. It also will arrange for cut-rate appraisals for homeowners who need additional evidence to present at hearings.

So far, more than 900 city homeowners have taken advantage of the help, including more than 500 who took advantage of low-cost appraisals, Mr. Lamb said.

The other meetings will be held Wednesday at Pittsburgh Arlington PreK-8; Thursday at the Academy at Westinghouse in Homewood; March 22 at Pittsburgh Langley High School in Sheraden; March 26 at Pittsburgh Arsenal PreK-5 and 6-8 in Lawrenceville; March 27 at Pittsburgh Carmalt PreK-8 in Brookline; March 28 at Pittsburgh Greenfield K-8 in Greenfield; and March 29 at Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy 6-12 in Oakland. All meetings begin at 7 p.m.

The assessment help is available only to city homeowners who are senior citizens or whose 2011 assessments totaled $150,000 or less. New assessments take affect in 2013, but the deadline for filing formal appeals is April 2..
