Pittsburgh, museums, library to hold alternative homecoming dance

The City of Pittsburgh has teamed with Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and the Carnegie Museums to offer an "alternative homecoming" dance for city and suburban high school students.
The dance, inspired by "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," a movie about teen-age tribulations, will be held at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Oakland from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Nov. 10.
In a statement, organizers said the dance is for teens "who find it difficult or intimidating to attend their own school's dance," as well as for students who are home-schooled, attend cyberschools or attend schools that don't have homecoming dances.
Joanna Doven, spokeswoman for Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, said organizers also have reached out to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and the gay-lesbian-bisexual-transgender community to make them aware of the dance.
"It's for everyone," she said.
The dance was an idea of the Mayor's Youth Council, which was working on anti-bullying initiatives before the movie, filmed in Pittsburgh, debuted.
Tickets are $3 at the Teen Desk at the Oakland library in advance or $5 at the door. Proceeds benefit teen programs. The dance is for students who are 14 to 17 and in grades nine to 12.
