Pittsburgh council postpones action on police-related legislation

Pittsburgh City Council today voted to hold for two weeks a trio of bills meant to address staffing issues and accounting problems in the embattled police bureau.
They include Councilwoman Theresa Kail-Smith's bill to establish a minimum staffing policy for the bureau meant to spur hiring. Another bill, which she also sponsored, would establish a trust fund for money collected by the bureau's special events office.
Council President Darlene Harris' bill to codify the $3.85 per officer per hour fee charged to businesses that hire police officers was also held. She attempted to amend the bill to raise the fee to 10 percent of a fourth-year officer's wages, which would raise the fee to $4.28 per officer per hour. That amendment failed.
