Pittsburgh City Council gave preliminary approval today to a reapportionment plan that keeps the Beechview and Schenley Farms neighborhoods in the same council districts.

The nine council districts must be redrawn after the census every 10 years to account for population shifts. A nine-member reapportionment advisory commission put forth a plan that shifted 30 voting precincts from one council district to another, but council members quarreled over a couple of the proposed changes.

The advisory commission proposed moving two Beechview voting districts from Councilwoman Natalia Rudiak's district to Councilwoman Theresa Kail-Smith's district. Council amended the plan to keep Beechview in Ms. Rudiak's district.

Last week, Ms. Kail-Smith inadvertently amended the advisory commission's plan in a way that split the Schenley Farms neighborhood between the districts of Councilmen Bill Peduto and Bruce Kraus. Council kept the neighborhood in Mr. Peduto's district in giving preliminary approval to the reapportionment plan Wednesday.

A final vote on the plan is scheduled for Tuesday.
