Pittsburgh Council approves ads on city assets and properties

Pittsburgh City Council passed legislation today that will enable advertisements on certain city assets and properties.
The city anticipates that the Market Based Revenue Opportunity Program will bring in about $500,000 in revenue and included the revenue in this year's budget. It opens up uniforms of city employees, city vehicles, the city's website and street furniture, like benches and parking kiosks, for advertisements.
But the legislation excludes public safety vehicles and uniforms, exterior of city buildings, little league ball fields, permanent advertising in parks and city council chambers, among other things. It also limits what can be advertised, barring advertisements for firearms, tobacco, alcohol or messages that include political, religious or philosophical speech.
Councilman Bill Peduto, who sponsored the legislation, said it also could enable sponsorship of senior citizens' centers or rental of city council's chambers for events.
The two bills that form the basis for the program passed unanimously today, with Council President Darlene Harris abstaining. Councilman Ricky Burgess was absent.
