The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded the David L. Lawrence Convention Center a platinum certification for operations and maintenance under its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system.

The announcement was made today as officials cut the ribbon on the convention center's first green roof.

Platinum is the highest level of certification the council awards. The convention center is the only one in the world to achieve that level of certification for operations and maintenance.

The convention center also has a gold certification for new construction.

With the new designation, the convention center becomes the only one in the world with a double certification, officials said.

The existing building certification measures building operations, cleaning and maintenance, recycling programs, landscaping, and systems upgrades.
