City employees have lost a ton of weight, and Mayor Luke Ravenstahl couldn't be more pleased.

"When I say a ton of weight, I mean an actual ton," he said at an event marking about 130 employees' loss of about 2,000 pounds through a WeightWatchers program.

The city last year incorporated Weight Watchers into its five-year-old CityFit initiative, which also provides nutrition counseling, softball leagues and ballroom dancing lessons to employees willing to embrace a healthier, more active lifestyle.

The "biggest losers" -- those who shed the most pounds -- included mayoral staffer Laurie Dierker. She's lost about 50 pounds.

"I saw this weight loss happen on a daily basis. She looks tremendous," Mr. Ravenstahl said.

City officials said healthier leaving should result in fewer health claims and health insurance savings down the road.
