Pittsburgh City Council today unanimously passed legislation banning smoking from playgrounds and other areas of city parks frequented by children.

If the bill is signed into law, signs would be posted to designated areas and the Department of Parks and Recreation would set the penalty for violators. The bill was sponsored by council members Ricky Burgess, Bruce Kraus and Corey O'Connor.

The law would take effect July 1.
