Passengers charged after stolen car chase

Police have filed charges against two passengers of a stolen car whose driver led police on a high-speed chase through Downtown and then died after he jumped into the Allegheny River late Wednesday.
Anthony and Antoine Leonard, both 20 and from the Hill District, were found in the car, which had been carjacked on Monday night in Lawrenceville, after it crashed into another car Fort Duquesne Boulevard and Stanwix Street. The man behind the wheel, 19-year-old David Thomas, ran from the car, making his way to the river walk, where he jumped into Allegheny River. River Rescue divers later pulled him from the water, but he died at Allegheny General Hospital.
When police searched the car, they found the wheelchair of Antoine Leonard and a black nylon bag with a black Smith and Wesson firearm, a box of ammunition and medical supplies inside. Antoine Leonard admitted to police that the firearm belonged to him, police said in a criminal complaint, and was charged with carrying a firearm without a license because he does not have a concealed carry permit. He was arraigned at noon on Thursday and remained in the Allegheny County Jail, unable to make $25,000 bond.
Police said Anthony Leonard, while getting out of the crashed Ford Taurus, repeatedly slammed the door into adjacent police car, and then resisted when police attempted to place him in handcuffs. He is charged by summons with criminal mischief and resisting arrest.
