Pittsburgh will offer free parking Saturdays at city parking authority garages Downtown and in Oakland and Shadyside during the holiday season.

Visitors will be able to park for free at any of the authority's garages in those neighborhoods starting this Saturday. They will be able to do so through Saturday, Dec. 22.

The city's parking authority board approved the initiative today.

Earlier today, Pittsburgh Councilman Bill Peduto said he will introduce legislation on Monday that would provide free on-street parking on Nov. 24, in honor of "Small Business Saturday," a day when shoppers are urged to support independent and small retailers.

The city normally enforces meters from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Mr. Peduto's initiative would waive enforcement of on-street meters city wide for the one day.
