An off-duty police officer injured his hand after he intervened in a fight on the South Side Friday night.

The officer was working a security detail at 12th and East Carson streets, where a movie was being filmed, when he was alerted to a report of a fight at a bar about a block away, at 13th and East Carson streets, said Pittsburgh police Cmdr. Scott Schubert. The fight was reported at around 8:35 p.m., a dispatch supervisor said.

A man involved in the fight "became aggressive" with the officer and the two began tussling as he attempted to put the man in handcuffs, police said. Zone 3 police arrived on scene and subdued the man, taking him into custody. At some point, the man was pepper-sprayed by either the off-duty officer or the officers who arrived on scene to assist him.

The off-duty officer was taken to UPMC Mercy, where doctors examined his hand. The man who was arrested was also taken to a hospital to be evaluated before heading to the Allegheny County Jail.

Cmdr. Schubert said he did not know the suspect's name or what he would be charged with.
