Like many parts of the world, the city of Pittsburgh will observe Earth Hour from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. today.
To make a statement about the threat of climate change, buildings around the world will go dark during that hour. Councilman Bill Peduto has arranged for "iconic buildings" at all of the city's universities, including Hamerschlag Hall at Carnegie Mellon University and the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh, to take part.
"I am proud of Pittsburgh's continued environmental leadership," Mr. Peduto said in a statement. "Pittsburgh's universities have long been leaders of the region and it is only appropriate that they lead Pittsburgh's Earth Hour efforts."
