A Hill District man killed in the neighborhood late Monday argued with several other men before he was shot, Pittsburgh police said Tuesday.

Edward Sanders, 47, was walking near a set of steps that lead to Bedford Avenue about 10 p.m. when "he became involved in a verbal confrontation" with several other men.

As they argued, another man walked up behind Mr. Sanders and shot him in the head, Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki said. The unidentified assailant then ran through a courtyard and onto Chauncey Drive.

Officers responding to reports of shots fired found Mr. Sanders in the 2400 block of Bedford Avenue. He was taken to UPMC Presbyterian, where he was pronounced dead at 10:14 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office, which found that he was also shot in the trunk.

Homicide detectives have made no arrests and the commander urged anyone with information to call the squad at 412-323-7161.
